1. Caracterização da atividade antimicrobiana e tecnologica de tres culturas bacteriocinogenicas e avaliação de sua eficiencia no controle de Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus e Bacillus cereus em queijo Minas frescal. / Characterization of the antimicrobian and technological activity of three bacterion producing cultures and evaluation of its efficiency in the Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus e Bacillus cereus control in Minas frescal cheese.
The biopreservation system, such as bacteriocinogenic lactic bacteria cultures and/or their bacteriocins, have received increasing attention and new approaches to control pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms have been developed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the action of bacteriocin-producing cultures (Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis ATCC 114

2. Uso de culturas adjuntas e ultrafiltração para melhoria de sabor e textura de queijo prato com reduzido teor de gordura. / Use of associate cultures and ultrafiltration for improvement of flavor and texture of cheese plate with reduced fat text .
O objetivo desse trabalho foi estudar o perfil físico-químico, reológico e sensorial dos queijos Prato comerciais com reduzido teor de gordura e testar o uso de culturas adjuntas e de retentados de ultrafiltração de baixo fator de concentração para melhoria de sabor e textura dos queijos. O trabalho foi dividido em três etapas: 1) queijos comerciais;

3. The influence of starter and adjunct lactobacilli culture on the ripening of washed curd cheeses
Ten strains of lactobacillus from the CNRZ collection were tested as adjunct culture in miniature washed curd cheeses manufactured under controlled bacteriological conditions with two different starters, Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis IL 416 and Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris AM2. Lactobacilli growth seemed to be dependent on the Lactobacillus strain b

4. Evaluation of lysis filtration as an adjunct to conventional blood culture.
A lysis filtration system was used in conjunction with conventional broth culture for 1112 blood cultures. The system, which entailed collection of 5 ml of blood into bottles containing 50 ml isotonic phosphate buffer, Tween 20, and Rhozyme with subsequent filtration using a 0.45 micron Millipore field monitor, was simple and economical to use. Positive resu

5. Strategy for Manipulation of Cheese Flora Using Combinations of Lacticin 3147-Producing and -Resistant Cultures
The aim of the present study was to develop adjunct strains which can grow in the presence of bacteriocin produced by lacticin 3147-producing starters in fermented products such as cheese. A Lactobacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei strain (DPC5336) was isolated from a well-flavored, commercial cheddar cheese and exposed to increasing concentrations (up to 4,

6. Detection of cytomegalovirus in shell vial cultures by using a DNA probe and early nuclear antigen monoclonal antibody.
An in situ biotinylated DNA probe assay was evaluated as an adjunct to anti-cytomegalovirus early nuclear antigen indirect immunofluorescence and cytopathic effect on cytomegalovirus-infected monolayers in shell vial cultures. Viral infection was detected by early nuclear antigen indirect immunofluorescence at 24 h and by DNA probe assay and shell vial cytop

7. Simplified organ cultures of human embryo trachea in the diagnosis of viral respiratory disease of children
Organ cultures of human embryonic trachea in test tubes were used as an adjunct to tissue cultures in the isolation of respiratory viruses from children in hospital. Fifty-one viruses were obtained from 127 specimens, giving an isolation rate of 40%. Fifteen viruses were isolated from the original tissue cultures and also after passage through organ culture.

8. Isolation of Chlamydia trachomatis from endometriums of women with and without symptoms.
Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from the endometrial cavities of three out of 19 women with positive cervical cultures, who were all symptomless sexual contacts of men with non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU). C trachomatis was recovered from the endometrial cavities of four out of 14 women with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), three of whom had positive ce

9. Clinical utility of broth cultures of cerebrospinal fluid from patients at risk for shunt infections.
For patients with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunts, culture of the CSF remains the most valuable tool in the evaluation of suspected shunt infections. To detect anaerobic Propionibacterium sp., a well-described cause of these infections, many clinical microbiology laboratories routinely employ a broth medium as an adjunct to solid media. The use of broth, ho

10. Detection of bone marrow metastases in neuroblastoma using a short term tissue culture technique.
AIMS: To improve detection of neuroblastoma metastases in the bone marrow: morphological evaluation of bone marrow is a routine and important component of the clinical staging of neuroblastoma and it depends on the successful identification of tumour cells which may only be present at extremely low levels. METHODS: Bone marrow mononuclear cells from patients

11. Electron microscopic observations on the virus particles in Herpes simplex encephalitis
Cerebral cortex from eight fatal cases of Herpes simplex encephalitis has been studied by electron microscopy. The diagnosis had been based on clinical findings, necropsy evidence of bitemporal necrosis, and histological confirmation of intranuclear inclusions with a lymphocytic inflammatory response, even though virus cultures were unsuccessful. Virus parti

12. Enrichment culture coagglutination test for rapid, low-cost diagnosis of salmonellosis.
Specific diagnosis of salmonellosis by conventional culture and identification methods usually requires 2 to 4 days. Since Salmonella may be disseminated from infected individuals during this period, this amount of time required for diagnosis may be too slow to aid in epidemic control. To obtain earlier diagnoses of salmonellosis, a coagglutination test was
