RESUMO

Abstract: This study discusses the monophthongization of the diphthong [eI] to [e] in the "I portuguese language spoken in Caxias, a city in Maranhão, in the light of the Variation Theory (cf Labov, 1972, 1994; Sankoff, G., 1982; Sankoff, D., 1988; Tarallo, 1994a; Chambers, 1995; Mollica, 1998; CalIou et alii, 1998), and of the recent proposals of phonological interpretation of the monophthongization made by Bisol (1989, 1994) and Schane (1995). We seek to answer the folIowing questions in this work: (1) which factors factors - linguistic and extralinguistic- are correlated with the application of the monophthongization mIe? (2) how is the phenomenon being implemented: through lexical diffusion or through a regular way, in the neogrammatical spirit?, and (3) which phonological model would best treat that phenomenon? In agreement with Labov (1981, 1994), the monophthongization is a phenomenon of sound change that is implemented according to Neogrammatical mIes, that is, it is strictly associated with phonetic factors; he defends the hypothesis that the change affects the segment of the word. Oliveira (1991, 1992, 1995, 1997), on the other hand, states that alI sound changes are implemented through lexical diffusion, affecting the lexical item, not just part of it. Conceming the implementation the diphthong [eI] monophthongization in the Caxias dialect, it is not possible to decide since it has characteristics that simultaneously sustain both proposals. Other works that examine the process, which specificalIy treat the description of the phenomenon (Paiva, 1996; Mollica, 1998), state that it is specifically motivated by structural factors, without any diastract variation. The present work shows that structural factors aren t the main determiners of the application of the glide deletion mIe; social and lexical factors are also important to the explanation of the monophthongization of the diphthong [eI]. It also shows that the mIe presents diastract differentiation, and it many have restrictions conceming the standard modality vs. the non-standarde modality The phonological model that accounts for the phenomenon it is still very obscure. We noticed that Bisol (1989, 1994) s interpretation of the monophthongization accounts for the reduction of the diphthong in focus before palatal, but the explanation given to phenomenon before tap or simple vibrant is questionable. Regarding the monophthongization of the diphthong [eI] before the vowel [a] (e.g. meia), nothing is mentioned by the proposal. The Particle Phonology, according to Schane (1995), doesn t make clear if the phenomenon is per si determined by the syllabic duration or by the following segment.
