RESUMO

The present research consists in an analysis of practices and agents that contribute to maintain the band of music in scene in the State of São Paulo. The method used was a cross-sectional survey with an explainable approach, according to Earl Babbie (1990). Within this proposition, eighty-eight conductors among severalband categories, besidesother recognized experts, were interviewed in order to collect data and find events that influenced the music bands in the last five decades. The following factors were analyzed: the practice of voluntary people, the action of the institution band in the communities, the alternative forms of financial acquisition, the education ofJconductors, the teaching and pedagogical materiaIs utilized, the responsibility of supporters, besides the profile of clients and the differences between civil and military bands. According to the resuIts, it was concluded that the student bands are stimulated by championships and are cunning for their survival. Also, it was verified the absence of specific literature and the omission of academic courses that prepare band conductors for the reality of student groups. Finally, a critical vision of the researcher was presented with considerations about the relationship among bands, universities, schools of music, government and communities
