RESUMO

Working almost fifteen years in a hospital instituition, I observe, empirically, that the communication relationship between health professionals and patients occurs in a formal basis, in which the professional communicates his forced knowledge, also, the autonomy . Transforming this assertion into a hypothetical question, which it was confirmed , by occasion of the developement of the correct research, whose general objective is to understand how is the participation of clientes/patients in the decisionmaking process. Looking to reach the intended objective, I developed a qualitative study in a Surgical Internation Unit, at the public University Hospital, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The research subjects involved were the elective surgery patients and the health professionals (Doctors and the Nursing team), so that the datacollection was given through the tecniques of observation and interviews. Both of the tecniques followed the pre-established plan. The analysis of the emerging data permited me to confirm that is the patient who decides to solicites for medical aid and the profesionals, apparently, perceive him only how a surgical case. They dont inform about the examinations and the procedure prescribed. They also dont consent his participation in yourself care. They still dont take into consideration the complaint and the fears, dont respect the right to the refuse anyone procedure prescribed. His capacity and intelligence are despised. Therefore, since the moment the human being is admitted to the hospital, he is slowly relieved from his subject condition, turning to be treated as na object. He loses the command (control) of his own body, his autonomy, being denied his capacity of reflection (thought) and therefore his power of decison. So, in this context, communication, centralized on a formal basis of relationships, doesnt let the possibility of the taking a decision on the part of the person who shoud have the legitimate power to decide about questions which involve his/her body, health and care.
