RESUMO

This research is based on a case study, of an exploratory nature, that investigates a mathematics learning situation in which Piagetâs reconstruction and re-signification theories are applied in a specific classroom context. The target participants of this study are sixth grade students of a class in a public elementary school in Brazilâs Federal District. The goal was to develop a pedagogical activity that would result in their understanding of the perimeter and area concepts, based in the theories of Piaget. The different tools used for data analysis result in a methodological structure that enables the comprehension of the chosen theme. Semi-structured interviews and experimental surveys were applied. All the data analyzed in the research came from speech observation, evaluation of the schoolbook and experimental intervention. With these elements, the learning level of geometry concepts was analyzed. The results point to a significant improvement in the comprehension of these concepts and to an encouragement for teachers in training to promote new researches. More researches should be made, considering the ideas of learning theorists, focusing on the mathematics concepts.
