RESUMO

The ornitophilous plant guild was studied in a Caatinga area, with decidual xerophytic vegetation in Pernambuco, Northeast of Brazil, during the period from julho/2002 to junho/2003. Eight ornitophilous species were registered in the studied community. The species belong to five families and seven genera. The Cactaceae was the most representative family, with three species pollinated by hummingbirds, followed by Bromeliaceae with two species. Fifty percent of the species shows herbaceous habit, proceded by the shrubs (37,5%). As expected, most of the species have red (62,5%). All the species have tube flowers with corollas measuring on average 20,26 mm length. The sugar concentration in the nectar varied from 18% to 33% and the volume from 22μl to 41μl. During the whole year there were species in flowering. Five hummingbird species were observed in the community. Only one was considered resident and the others temporary. Chlorostilbon aureoventris, due to its visit behavior was considered as the dominant species. The number of species of the guild is lower then the found in studies with the same focus in other ecosystems as, for example, in Atlantic forest remnants and neotropical areas in general. Despite the structure of the guild be similar to other studies, a Trochilinae hummingbird, and not a Phaethornithinae, acted as the comunity organizer species.
