RESUMO
A transient semi-Markov model for predicting the recovery progress of coronary patients is described. Making use of the recovery states defined by Thomas in a 1968 study, the model is a direct formulation of the underlying problem and is computationally more efficient than the Markov model he proposed. The model estimates distributions of the recovery-state populations, length of stay in the states and in the system, and probable recovery course of patients at any point in the system; it has potential use in the allocation of services and resources, planning, utilization review, and the study of the dynamics of coronary care systems.
