RESUMO

Campos de monchões are common landscapes in seasonally flooded plains of Central Brazil. They are seasonal marshes on whose flat surfaces many convex earthmounds, which are called monchões are scattered. The earthmounds are covered by woody cerrado (savanna type) vegetation, while the surrounding marshes (the campo ) are covered by a grassy vegetation. On the top of the earthmounds, there are massive termite nests raised above the flood level. A five hectare campo de monchões was surveyed in Cuiabá, in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, in a seasonally flooded depression surrounded by rock crests which are covered by cerrado their termite nests were measured. Soil samples were collected and analysed in the laboratory. The cerrado vegetation was surveyed in the earthmounds as well as in the bordering crests. Three other regional cerrados were surveyed to supplly a referential base for comparisons. The 525 earthmounds were responsible for 6,44% of the campo area and their dimensions ranged from 0,2 o 22,0 m in diameter and from 0,1 to 1,1 un height. The smaller earthmounds distribution in the campo was strongly aggregated while the larger ones showed a strong affinity, in physical and chemical properties, with termite nest soils, which presented a finer texture and a higher amount of exchangeable cerrado . The termite species found in the smallest earthmounds was Armitermes euamignathus, whose small nests are built directly over the campo surface and are themselves the earthmounds. In the largest earthmounds, massive termite nests are bulit by Cornitermes spp., generally on the highest part of the mound .Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations.
