RESUMO

Since the 1980s, urban violence has been increasing in Brazil. Violence has become one of the most serious Community Health problems today. In some parts of the country, along with other external causes, it is the second leading cause of death. The city of Londrina has been experiencing a disturbing growth on violence rates which has caused city leaderships to make a move on them. The aim of this study was to identify the community leaderships? view over violence and which fighting strategies they anticipate in their realities. The leaderships were also questioned about the health area performance in this matter. 25 leaderships were interviewed from two outskirts with different community approaches. The study was exploratory, with qualitative method and semi-structured interviews. Leaderships were chosen by a process called ?snowball? or network sampling. Interviews were conducted until the saturation of converging answers was reached. Data was analyzed using the Bardin method. Results showed that the leaderships? view over violence is full of contradictions and defense mechanisms, as well as naturalization and violence denial. Concerning fighting strategies, in the less organized community rules a claim directed at the authorities. In the more organized one, partnerships with other society sectors, including the government, are evident. The performance of health professionals was considered poor but able to improve with the possibility of partnerships with the community. This study contributed to the identification of strategies the community can use to fight violence and therefore to help reducing the damages caused by it in the society.
