RESUMO

Given the lack of theoretical publications on the theme of drugs, within the scope of Social Work, this study aims to start a discussion on the challenge faced by social workers when confronting gender and religious issues that are involved in alcohol and other drug treatments, which might be considered an important element from a professional point of view. We initiated the paper by considering the hypotheses that the lack of theoretical approach on this theme reveals not the absence of professionals in the field, but the inability to standardize professional procedures. This study was conducted by taking into consideration the intertwined relationship among the use of alcohol and other drugs, religion, gender and professional practice. We chose the theoretical and methodological perspectives of Marx as our method of analyses. While trying to elucidate the challenges imposed on social workers, we analyzed the role of the state and society intervention in public policies focused on health and social services. We also followed the professions ways by which, based on its ethical codes, it achieved theoretical-political and ethical-professional maturity along its existence in Brazil. Moreover we present four social worker statements. Those workers perform their jobs in institutions that offer help to alcohol and other drug users in the state of Rio de Janeiro, from which two are located in the city of Rio de Janeiro and the other two can be found in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes. In each of those cities we chose one very strict religious internship system institution and one that is not religion-oriented and do perform ambulatory attendance. They are: Núcleo de Estudo e Pesquisa em Atenção ao Uso de Drogas NEPAD/UERJ and Primeira Clínica Popular do Estado do Rio de Janeiro - Michele de Moraes in Rio de Janeiro; Projeto Resgate and Associação Manoel José Barbosa Projeto Amai in Campos dos Goytacazes. We aimed to introduce this emergent problem in a creative, easy and enjoyable manner. For that reason we elaborated the theoretical presentation of this study based on Lews Carrolls Alices Adventures in Wonderland.
