RESUMO

With the advent of the discovery of the drugs making up the Antiretroviral Therapy (ARVT), our concerns with facing and living with the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Aids) and its causal agent, the Acquired Immune Deficiency Virus (HIV), changed significantly. When well managed, ARVT makes it possible for patients to live longer and with good quality. The overall objective of the study was to analyze the relationships and subjective aspects which result from participating in a relationship group and using antiretroviral drugs in the quality of life of HIV-positive individuals. This study was carried out in two research stages. In the first stage, we checked whether the quality of life and subjectivity of HIV-positive individuals were influenced - positively or negatively - by having participated in a relationship group under treatment with antiretroviral drugs. We confirmed these influences by applying WHO s Quality of Life Assessment Tool (WHOQOL â 100) to thirteen volunteers taking part in a relationship group in BrasÃlia. We could see that the quality of life and subjectivity of the analyzed individuals are influenced, at times positively and at other times negatively, by their participation in the group and the use of antiretroviral drugs. We could also see that these influences can interfere directly in individual decisions on the treatment, on seeking help, on sexuality, and on personal beliefs. With the data thus obtained, we developed a suggestion for actions and postures for improving the quality of life of individuals experiencing the same health conditions. During the second stage of the research, we analyzed the relationships and subjective aspects perceived as a result of participating in the group and using antiretroviral drugs â medication adhesion â in the quality of life of four volunteers, two men and two women. The analysis was carried out based on data obtained in a semi-structured interview with open-ended and closed questions and on comparing them with our suggestion for actions and postures for improving the quality of life proposed in the first stage of the research. The study is justified by the need to develop realistic proposals based on scientific considerations for the daily routine of dealing with HIV/Aids. It is also justified by the experience of working with individuals living with HIV/Aids who want to ensure and preserve their quality of life. The study suggests the need for future investigations, particularly investigations focused on relations in relationship groups and sexual and emotional relationships between individuals with different HIV serologies.
