RESUMO

The sinanthropic beetle Alphitobius diaperinus (panzer, 1797) is widely distributed and is one of the most common arthropods associated with dung accumulated in egg producing poultry houses. It is well known as an important vector of several avian diseases. Using 3 diferent methods (pitfall trap, Arend s trap and Berlese s funnel) biweek1y colletions were performed, with the purpose of assessing the abundance and seasonality of A. diaperinus. In addition, by dissections of the digestive tube and laboratorie assays, the occurrence and prevalence of parasitic gregarines was also determined. The larval instars of this beetle were also determined by measuring the cephalic capsule, and the basal developmental temperature and thermic constant "K"ofthe specie. The basal temperature for the immature stages of this beetle reared at three temperatures (22 °C, 27 °C and 32 °C) and 75 % + 5 % humidity was 5,9 °C, and the thermic constant K, for the insect to complete the development of the immature stages from egg to adult emergence was determined to be 1440 Degree-Days. The best temperature for the development of A. diaperinus was found to be 27 °C (31 males and 46 females at 66 days), even trough the developmental rate was slower than that at 32 °C (21 males and 21 females, 51 days). The food preference verified using an olfactometer suggested that A. diaperinus prefers eggs of Musca domestica than those of Muscina stabulans and Chrysomya putoria
