RESUMO

The present study had the objective to observe the changes of the maxilla during the Denture Preparation phase, the initial stage of the treatment according to the Edgewise Sequential Directional Force System introduced by MERRIFIELD in 1986. In this study a set of 30 cephalometrics radiographies were taken from Brazilian withe individuaIs, from age 12 to 16 years old, both genders, from the Orthodontic Post-graduation - FOP-UNICAMP, where 15 cephalometrics radiographies were taken initially and 15 at the end of this phase. All the patients were submitted to the extraction of maxillary first premolars and they all used the high-pull J-hook headgear applying forces in the mesial of the cuspids brackets with a force close to eight oz, in order to move the cuspids teeth distaly. The average time of this treatment phase was 14 months. There had been analyzed six cephalometrics measurements observing the maxilla s changes in the horizontal (SNA e PoOr.NA), vertical (ENA-PoOr; ENP-PoOr e PoOr.PPt) positions and its length (distance between Fptm and ENA when they are projected to the Frankfurt horizontal plan). The results achieved were not of statistical significance in any of the measurements analyzed when the significance levei of 5 % (p
