RESUMO

This work presents the main environmental problems of the Hydrografic Basin of Rio Jaguaribe. JoÃo Pessoa - PB, as a consequence of the occupation model and use of the soil, where several activities are in conflict with the urban function of the area. The population, of the dwellings of standard bass, formed by subnormal agglomerates (slums or "favelas") live in a state of extreme poverty, presenting high demographic density; this together with other factors (elevated declivity of the hillsides and high indexes pluviometrics), has produced a chain of accidents in several sections along the basin. The map of units of relief, produced in digital process, to the scale 1:25.000, shows the relationship between the subnormal agglomerates and the elements of the relief. The most vulnerable communities to the floods are located in areas of fluvial plain, fluvial-marine and plain with evidences of karstic effect; those located on slopes (hillsides), present high vulnerability to the erosion processes and sliding, frequent in FormaÃÃo Barreira sediments. On the other hand, the occupation map and use of the soil also produced to the same scale, highlights the elements of the occupation enhancing the existent conflicts (industrial area, zone of environmental preservation and other uses). With base in the knowledge in the occupation ways, of the relief, of the use of the soil and of its intrinsic relationships, it is suggested a Plan of Administration that allows the balanced occupation and address actions for the reduction of the risk, in the areas where the problem already exists.
