RESUMO

The uterine cervix cytology, besides being useful in the screen of cervical cancer, it can also be used in the detection of suggestive characteristics of infection by the Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) .The objective of this study was to compare the cytology, and, the technique of direct immunofluorescence (IFD) for Chlamydia trachomatis, using 171 uterine cervix smears of women assisted in the section of uterine cancer prevention, in Amaury de Medeiros Integrated Center - CISAM, in Recife. Six cases (3,5%) were positive for C. trachomatis by IFD. The cytology showed eosinofilic inclusions in metaplatics cells, being considered suggestive of infection for C. trachomatis in just one case (0,6%), confirmed by IFD. The cytology can contribute in the detection of the Chlamydia infection, if appropriate collecting procedure were applied, for the presence of glandular endocervical and/or metaplastic cells, besides being considered also the knowledge of the characteristic cytological criteria of this infection, because, when compared to IFD, it showed low sensibility. IFD should continue being used in the detection of cases of Chlamydia infection, with criterion and, if possible, with larger inclusion in public health services
