RESUMO

Navigation Locks are structures used for raising and lowering boats between stretches of water of different levels on rivers due to natural or artificial obstacles. Navigation Locks¿ design shall aim a safe and fast boat transposition. The study of flow downstream of tainter gates inside the conduits is important because of the flow characteristics that are highly turbulent and with areas of low pressure. The occurrence of low pressure may induce the cavitation phenomenon which causes severe damages, going from vibration to erosion in concrete structures. This research aims to verify the behavior and to develop a criterion to estimate low flow pressures downstream of a tainter gate during its operation in conduits of navigation locks during the chamber filling and empting. To fulfill this aim, it has been built, at the hydraulic experimental lab of Furnas, a reduced scale model of a navigation lock, where were held studies with instantaneous measure of pressure downstream the gate, both in the upper and lower conduit level. Those studies were made for different conditions of the gate¿s aperture and water level upstream it for both permanent and transitory flows. Different speeds of gate aperture were also studied. By analyzing the results it was possible to conclude that, regarding to minimum pressures, the permanent flow condition is more severe than the transitory one indicating that the former shall be used to predict the lower pressures in similar conditions.
