RESUMO

This is a study of Katukina a language of the Panoan Family spoken at the State of Acre, Brazil. The work is divided into two parts - a diacronic one and a syncronic one. In the first part we discuss about the traditional methododology used for classifying languages into families; the anthrotoponyms are questioned and a different methodology for establishing groups of languages is proposed. In the second part, the syncronic one, some of the theoretical resources of Generative Grammar are used to account tor the data aí the phonological, morphological and syntactic levels. The lexicographical level is examined too. The work includes also three appendices, one of which is a bilingual (Katukina - Portuguese / Portuguese Katukina) glpssary of the language
