RESUMO

Currently, the understanding of the mechanical behavior in landfills, keeps on being a complex subject, which still depends on more studies. Therefore, this research was developed to contribute to the understanding on the mechanical behavior of the urban solid waste. This work was carried out with the objective at developing a new model of settlement prediction for landfills, but considering the biological degradation of the waste. For this, confined compression tests on domestic solid waste in a great dimension edometric cell were executed. Also, four landfills experimental cells and two lisimeters were constructed and monitored. The results of the confined compression tests allowed to know and to understand better the mechanical behavior of domestic solid waste. Moreover, it was measured the influence of organic material in the compressibility parameters. The monitoring and analysis of the landfills experimental cells and lisimters results allowed to know the factors and mechanisms that control the settlement development in landfill with time. From the results of the confined compression tests and field experiments it, was possible to develop a new model for settlement estimate for landfills. Finally, it was verified that the application of this new model is satisfactory for settlement prediction.
