Analise epidemiologica e avaliação do tratamento e das complicações dos casos de trauma facial atendidos na FOP-UNICAMP, no periodo de abril de 1999 a março de 2000

RESUMO

This prospective study aimed the analysis of the epidemiology, treatment and complications of the facial trauma occurred in the region of Piracicaba, including the cities of Piracicaba, Limeira and Rio Claro, where 340 patients were attended and evaluated frem April1999 to March 2000. Threugh the analysis of the obtained data, it was observed a greater occurrence of male (78,53%) and white (60,59%) patients, often between 21 and 30 years old (25,88%), most of them economically active (54,71%), mainly industrial and construction workers, drivers and similars (20,59%). The cases happened mainly in October (12,94%) and on the weekends (44,41%). The most frequent etiology was falls (37,06%). The initial care was carried out in 69,71% of cases in the first 48 hours and 42,34% of patients with surgical indication were operated during the period of 8 to 15 days after trauma. 31,18% of patients presented some relevant medical history and 41,47% reported some addiction. There was a prevalence of the fractures in the middle third of the face (40,88%), mainly involving the zygomatic complex (38,02%). 48,82% of patients presenting facial trauma also revealed associated trauma, of which the ones occurring on the extremities were the most frequent (45,88%). As for the interventions performed, 50,59% of the facial trauma submitted to some sort of intervention and among cases that did not undergo any procedure (49,41%), 52,98% presented fractures. 5,83% of all the fractures presented were submitted to maxillomandibular fixation. The soft tissue trauma that needed suture corresponded to 68,22% of cases and the most affected region was the face (56,30%). The post-operatory complications occurred in 18,92% of the surgical cases, of which infections were the most common (9,91%)
