RESUMO

The search for maximizing mineral exploitation, associated to the safety measures needed in order to make this activity viable, force us to seek new forms of analysis to achieve these guidelines in an optimum way. The purpose of this work is to contribute to a better explanation of the breakdown of phyllite slopes by flexural toppling in the region of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero, generating input data for situations with same pattern of behavior, as an attempt of better understanding the phenomenon. Besides, it can also be used as a parameter in the daily routine of the mining operation when it comes to the angles adopted for this type of.rock mass Parametric tests were performed on a small bench, using failure conditions commonly observed in phyllite excavations carried out in the Quadrilátero and which are prone to flexural toppling. The Method of Kinematic Analysis of Goodman and Bray (1976), the evaluation of toppling conditions by the Aydan and Kawamotos (1992) Limiting Equilibrium Method and the analysis by finite elements using RocSciences software, Phase2, were considered for the parametric analysis. Based on the obtained results, the condition of collapse by shear at the foot of the slope, where flexural toppling due to geometric constraints was not possible to occur, was implemented to the appropriate Limit Equilibrium techniques for slopes stability problems through Excel spreadsheets. Behavioral tendency graphs were generated for the variations of the slope face dip, for the discontinuities and for the spacing between discontinuities as well, trying to simulate more favorable conditions to the occurrence of flexural toppling.
