RESUMO

Based on the observation that the RBV (Resource Based View) is a perspective that can explain the heterogeneity of companies in terms of performance, and that studies using this theoretical perspective normally focus on large companies, this study seeks to analyze the heterogeneity among small engineering companies, in relation to RBV. To achieve this, a multicase study was carried out with three Engineering companies in Santa Catarina. Interviews were carried out with the directors and employees of these companies, and public documents and reports on the theme were also used. The data were analyzed using a theoretical framework derived from RBV, and the results show that the structure of the company, its network of relationships, image, production capacity and business training are essential resources. It concludes that non-essential resources under the RBV perspective are also important, as they take part in the accumulation process. It concludes, furthermore, that the resources owned or controlled by small companies in the area of Engineering relate predominantly to the human capital of the business owners, and are accumulated over time, throughout the persons career These resources are therefore idiosyncratic, impossible to imitate, and non-transferable.
