RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to describe the morphology of the cervix of Santa Ines ewes. One hundred cervix were collected in a slaughter house (Petrilina PE) and used in this study. Anatomically, the cervices presented an average length of 4.68 cm, with minimum and maximum values of 3 and 7 cm respectively. The cervix presented five types of external orifices: flap, duckbill, spiral, rosette and hole. The duckbill (51%) was the most frequently observed type of external orifice. The mean number of cervical rings was 5.68, with a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 8 and they presented a funnel shape, being wider at both ends and narrower in the middle. The mean internal diameter of the rings was 2.981.21 cm, and the smallest diameter was observed in the fourth ring. The finding of cul-de-sac in some of the rings was a new information, and appeared in 100% on the first 2 rings. Histologically, the cervix showed a simple ciliated columnar epithelium, although at the caudal region the epithelium sometimes was showed stratified squamous cells. Villi were observed all along the cervix. Just below the epithelium, the connective tissue was divided in 3 layers: the first, closest to the epithelium, was dense and regular, the second was dense and irregular, and the third was loose. Veins, capillaries and nerves were present. In conclusion, the results obteined in thid present study may contribute to the development of commercial devices and programs to artificial insemination technique (transcervical method) and they must de considered alltogether.
