RESUMO

The object of this research was to investigate internal aspects due to cognitive-afective evaluation of epileptic patients who control their sexual behavior. 120 subjects were evaluated according to two groups: epileptic patients and normal subjects. They were assessed with the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (Spielberger e col, 1970), Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, 1974) and Sexual Behaviour Inventory (Souza, 1992). We also collected spontaneous data about sexual activities, values, religion, beliefs, affection, personal sexual experiences and perception ofthe other. Sexual disorder (SD), anxietyand depression occurred more frequently in the epileptic group than in the control group. Association between anxiety or depression with SD was found in both groups. Factors such as the age of onset of seizures, frequency, duration and medication not were related to DS. Temporallobe epilepsy was related to DS. Perception of seizure control was highly related to anxiety and depression but not with SD. Subjective factors related to self depreciation and sexual alterations appeared in the epileptic patients. The data suggest that there is a correlation between organic factors, personality traits and personal experiences which predispose to the appearance of sexual alterations. New multidisciplinary research may contribute to better understanding of functional relationships and broader therapeutic proceedings to the epileptic patient .
