RESUMO

Currently, Distance Education (DE) can be seen as a reply to some ever-increasing demands: fast dissemination of knowledge, with low cost and accessibility; qualification, both academic as well as corporative; and life-long learning. However, DE environments have often not reached their potential, because they only present their contents in a very impersonal way, without taking into consideration the motivation and particular necessities of each student. This lack of personalisation may hinder the studentsâ performance, causing them to become unmotivated and consequently abandon their distance courses. In fact, the learning task to learn entails continuously monitoring the learner, in the attempt of understanding who he/she is and of what he/she is capable. Only thus, one can propose challenges, make learning an attractive experience, and help the learner attribute meaning to recently acquired knowledge. In this light, the use of a Learning Companion (LC) can, to the extent of its ability to help mitigate the aforementioned problems influence positively in the performance of the student. The coupling of LC to the systems of DE haracterizes i-learning (intelligent learning). The objective of i-learning environments is to adequately cater for the particular needs of each student. Thus, we have developed an i-learning environment; the Project Management Knowledge Learning Environment (PMK). The PMK is implemented as web site. PMKâs domain is Project Management, for which exists a great training and education demand in both the public and the private sectors. The PMK counts on pedagogical resources such as: exercises, study materials, tips, links related to the studied topic, and templates for the Project Manager. To increase the capacity of the PMK in dealing with the learnersâ individual necessities, a LC, VICTOR (Virtual Intelligent Companion for TutOring and Reflection), was integrated to the environment. VICTOR interacts with the students during their learning, collaborating for the success of the learning tasks. VICTOR provides immediate feedback for the learnerâs actions, offering tips and trying to keep the student motivated. The results of experiments we carried out with PMK out showed that PMK is easy to use, an adequate tool for Education in Project Management and that the presence of VICTOR motivates and helps students during their learning process
