RESUMO

This research had as proposal to analyze the performance in arithmetic operations and the attitudes towards mathematics, the point of view of significant learning. Were investigated 149 students of 6th. grade elementary school, with ages between 11 and 13 years and public schools in Santos city, SP. The subjects were submitted two stages of tests. In the first stage, the instruments used were a scale of attitudes towards mathematics and a mathematics test. In the second stage, after ninety days, were used as instruments also scale of attitudes and two mathematics tests. Students? teachers involved with research were submitted to a interview semi-structured. The results showed relation between the performance in arithmetic operations with natural numbers and attitudes towards mathematics (C=0,265 and p?0,05). Also was checked the correlation between the performance in arithmetic with entire number and attitudes towards mathematics (C=0,373 and p?0,05). There were found a significant correlation between the performance in arithmetic operations with natural numbers and performance in arithmetic operations with entire numbers (C=0,722 and p?0,001). It was checked that there is no significant difference of performance in arithmetic operations with natural numbers and with entire (p?0,05) when compared the genders. It was checked in the first stage of test that there was significant difference of attitudes, when compared the genders (p?0,05)
