RESUMO

Taxonomic studies of the species of the genus Vochysia Aublet (Vochysiaceae), which occur in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, based on herbarium material and field observations, are presented. They comprise 12 species: four from cerrado, V. cinnamomea, V. rufa and V. sessilifolia, of the sect. Vochysiel/a, and V. thyrsoidea, of the sect. Ciliantha; and eight from forest vegetation, V. bifalcata, V. glazioviana, V. laurifolia, V. magnífica, V. oppugnata, V. schwackeana, V. sel/oi and V. tucanorum, ali belonging to the section Ciliantha. Vochysia seI/o i was found to be the only species endemic to the state of São Paulo. Vochysia glazioviana, V. sessilifolia and V. thyrsoidea are referred for the first time to this state. The varieties under V. tucanorum were synonymized (var. fastigiata = var. tucanorum), and V. glazioviana was transferred from subsect. Lutescentes to Ferruginae. The species are described, depicted and distinguished by means of a key. Seedling morphology seems to allow distinction between cerrado and forest species. On the other side, leaf anatomical analyses showed that xeromorphic characteristics, e.g. thickened cuticle, multilayered epidermis, presence of hypoderm, well developed sclerenchyma accompanying the vascular tissue, may be shared by species from both types of habitat. The phylogenetic affinities of Vochysiaceae with the order Myrtales, as it has been currently suggested, appeared to be reinforced by the results of chromosome counts, 2n = 24, found for V. cinnamomea and V. tucanorum, from different sections. Species diversity was found to be higher in forests of the Coastal and Atlantic Plateau Provinces, mainly in Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira. Floristic singularity was found for the region of Serra de Franca. Eventually, species distribution data of the genus Vochysia in the state of São Paulo were applied for some regional phytogeographical analyses
