RESUMO

The sexuality s representations have been considered obscene and irnrnoral or, otherwise, they have been considered natural and universal. It has been a neglected sexuality subject m historical studies. This thesis llims at showing as a cultural element, inserted m historical contexts. It The studies the representations of sexuality m Pompeian iconography. following topics were studied: the history of Pompeii, history of excavations and the history of the Erotic Collection at the Museo Nazionale de Napoli. Traditional so-called pompeianist scholarship is studied, emphasizing the political and ideological aspects of the dominant discourse in both history and archaeology of Pompeii. A corpus of Pompeian sexual iconography is also collected and studied, aiming at innovati ve, critical approach to the subject
