RESUMO

Image compression techniques have been used as a mean to reducing the amount of data to be stored or transmitted in digital systems. The use of lossy image compression techniques is worth investigation, since those techniques lead to high compression rates, though they modify the information content of original images. In this work, we assess the effect of applying a lossy image compression technique to nuclear medicine images of the heart and evaluate the suitability of using compressed images for diagnosis. A set of 120 blood pool images from normal and abnormal patients was submitted to compression and decompression using the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). The average compression rate was 11:1. The effects of DCT compression on the estimation of qualitative and quantitative clinical parameters was submitted to statistical analysis. Additional/y, clinical parameters of subjective analysis were assessed by two skilled clinicians. Results show that DCT compression is suitable for visual analysis and for extracting parameters which do not require great accuracy as far as the time axis is concemed. For computing functional images (amplitude and phase) DCT seems to be unsuitable, at least for the thresholds used in this work. Therefore, it is recommended that lower thresholds (and thus lower compression rates) be used if functional images are to be computed
