RESUMO

Smoking is currently recognized as a chemical dependency that exposes the individuals to innumerable toxic substances. Nowadays smoking is internationally classified by the World Health Organization as the group of mental upheavals and behavior (CID 10) caused by psychoactive substance usage. The necessity to make efforts to help smokers to quit smoking is clearly evident. The number of smokers who seek for support is increasing; they are stimulated by a social environment each day more unfavorable to the consumption of tobacco and the increasing number of co-related illnesses. To help a smoker to quit smoking is an ethical question and above all a humanitarian one. Our objective in this research was to evaluate the quality of life of the smokers of the Smoking Control Program (SCP) in a Health Center; they were encouraged to acquire a new life style through a program of physical activity that contributed greatly to quit smoking by establishing new and healthy habits in the group. It is a qualitative research, classified as an evaluation case study; there were 03 (three) participants of the Smoking Control Program (SCP) of the Health Center of Santa Odila/Campinas,SP. This group participated in a specific program of physical activity developed by a Professional of Physical Education, where they did sequences of stretching and respiratory exercises. A walking program was also developed with a minimum frequency of 03 times per week and with a minimum duration of 30 minutes/day, during four months. Before initiating the program of physical activity, a medical evaluation of each individual of this research was carried through in order to verify if they were apt to practice physical activity. The evaluation instruments were: WHOQOL-Bref, Test of Fagerstrom and Individual Smoking Report. This study demonstrated a trend that a physical activity program can serve as a facilitator and encouragement so that smoking individuals continue the Smoking Control Program thus improving their quality of life
