RESUMO

Considering the population of special patients, especially, the mental retardation ones, it must be verified the necessity of epidemiological studies which can support the development and improvement of preventive and educative programs and also contribute with the knowledge of these subjects oral health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the oral health conditions of the mental retardation patients, registered at Special School Raio de Sol from Associação Pestalozzi of Campo Grande-MS, and the oral healths valuation and perception from their relatives, drawing a brief social-demographic profile too. This study was carried out 85 mental retardation subjects, 32 female and 53 male, with age range of 7-38 years. The diagnosis of oral healths conditions was carried out the prevalence of caries, dental biofilm and gum bleeding. A questionary with 3 parts was applied to the relatives by the researcher. The results showed that the target sample presents a poor oral hygiene (PHP =3.33%), high index of gum bleeding (ISG=68.82%) and caries attack high as well, being DMFT 6,4 and DMFS 11.5 with few teeth and surfaces presenting the illness, 1.06 and 2.10 respectively. The DMFD as much as the DMFS, oral cleanliness and gum bleeding showed an increase according to the mental retardation growed up. There were found 17.65% mental retardation patients caries free. It can be concluded that the target populations oral health is precarious; relatives had presented a good perception and valuation of the oral health of their dependents and the necessity of development and improvement oral healths programs for this population.
