RESUMO

Lyophilization of bovine pericardium (BP) in patches or manufactured valves may provide improved storage, sterilization, and handling. This paper describes the appraisal of some consequences of lyophilization on BP. Mechanical properties and shrinkage temperatures (ST) of six groups of BP, 50 samples each, were evaluated. Groups were: (1) fresh BP; (2) BP frozen in freezer, lyophilized and rehydrated; (3) BP frozen in liquid nitrogen, lyophilized and rehydrated; (4) BP treated with glutaraldehyde/formaldehyde; (5) BP treated with glutaraldehyde/formaldehyde, frozen in liquid nitrogen, lyophilized and rehydrated, (6) fresh BP, frozen in liquid nitrogen, lyophilized, rehydrated, treated with glutaraldehyde/formaldehyde. It measured ultimate tensile strength, elasticity module, and elongation, according ASTM D638 Standard. It was compared cytotoxicity of groups (4) and (5) following Nakamura (1989) adaptation and ISOI0993 Standard. Also in the groups (4) and (5) the residual aldehydes were measured using high performance liquid chromatography. Mechanical properties, except in group (2), are not statistically significant. Difference in the results of ST in all groups are not statistically significant. We conc1uded that BP can be lyophilized before and after glutaraldehyde/formaldehyde treatment without changing its mechanical properties and ST. Also Lyophilization of BP treated with glutaraldehyde/formaldehyde resulted in of decreasing cytotoxicity and residual aldehydes
