RESUMO

A descriptive study was performed with 52 women presenting pre-gestational obesity that joined the Nutritional Care Program for Gestational Weight Control, conducted at the Nutritional and Dietetic Service of the CAISM/UNICAMP, from March 2002 until September 2003. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usual food consumption of pregnant women before the implantation of the program and measure the weight gain during gestation as well as analyze the pregnancy evolution and perinatal results. The usual mean consumption of proteins, vitamins C, D, B6 and B12 reached and even surpassed the recommended values. The mean consumption of energy, zinc and vitamin A was around 80% of recommended values; ingestion of calcium and fibers was half of the recommended, while folic acid and iron were below 50%. The analysis by the median revealed that the consumption of energy and of the majority of nutrients was impaired in more than 50% of women, except for vitamin B6. In average, the gain weight in the program was 7.5kg; the total gain weight during pregnancy was 10.5kg with a 403g per week gain. High frequencies were observed of gestational diabetes (19.2%), hipertension during pregnancy (17.3%), macrossomia (15.3%) and cesarean section (57.7%). The other maternal and fetal conditions were not observed in values superior to those detected in the general population, this way confirming the validity of the program as a therapeutic adjuvant in gestations complicated by obesity
