RESUMO

Four alumínum tolerant and four aluminum sensitive maize inbred lines, previously selected in nutrient solution, were used as testers for the development of a sand culture technique , to screen Al tolerant genotypes. The method was adjusted through the study of seedling root growth in plastic pots with river sand irrigated with solution of 0 (Zero), 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 ppm of Al. The correspondent pH values were respectively, 5,90, 5,65, 5,42, 5,05, 4,97 and 4,80. Aliminum toxicity was evaluated through its effects on radicle length, seven days after planting. Data indicated on radicle length, seven days after planting. Data indicated that the solution of 45 ppm of Al, is already sufficient to discriminate tolerant from sensitive genotypes in sand culture. It is suggested, however, that the screening be done with a 75 ppm solution of Al, since root length reductions of sensitive plants, were significantly higher than the ones found at 45 ppm. This increase in aluminium, however, did not cause any significant reduction in radicle length of tolerant plants. Sixty six inbred lines were screened using sand culture and 75 ppm solution of Al. The were screened using sand culture and 75 ppm solution of Al. The effect of Al was studied in seedling characteristics as radicle length., root dry weight, top dry weight, number of seminal roots and endosperm dry weight ...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
