RESUMO

Photocurable formulations for optical fibers coating for industrial usage must remain stable for a minimum storage period of six months. According to the literature, this stability can be obtained from the addition of inhibitors ,wich suppress the action of free radicals - initiators of polymerization, wich can be thermically activeted during storage. A methodology was stablished in order to evaluate the stability of different formulations, by using differential scanning calorimetry, visual observation of gel appearance after storage in average temperatures about 60º C during weeks, and infrared spectroscopy. Two photoinitiators were evaluated, combined to three types of inhibitors in different levels of concentration. A rapid test (minutes), using differential scanning calorimetry, when properly interpreted, proved to be appropriated to replace, in some cases, the most traditional an long time (weeks) tests of gel appearance. With these techniques it was possible to show that the photoinitiator has a great influence in the photocurable compounds storage stability. Adequate formulations, with respect to the storage period (shelf life), cure velocity, and mechanical properties were obtained
