RESUMO

An experimental and numerical study is carried out to evaluate ice banks of parallel plates type. A simplified representative model is analysed, a computational code was developed and compared with experimental results. The finite difference method is used to solve the governing equations. For the mathematical model discretization, the method of fixed grid is used in the space domain. Complete and detailed methodology of the analysis of solidification, fundamental mechanism for the energy storage of low temperature are included. The heat transfer is treated as one dimensional conduction problem, with a constant temperature at the wall or changing uniformly as a function of time. In the liquid phase, the convection effects are not considered. Important parameters of the ice banks such as: superficial heat flux rates, velocity and time of the discharge, temperature distribution in the liquid and solid phases are discussed. Effects of the independent variables such as: water initial temperature, cooling fluid temperature and the spacing between the plates, over the relative parameters are quantitatively illustrated in this study, identifying the key factors to establish the best performance of the unit. Experimental results for different conditions, confirming the validity of the computational model are also included
