RESUMO

The residue molding sand generated in the foundry industry presents in its composition, among other constituent phenolic resin. This residue represents about in weight 2%, of the total of sand base used for making matrix elements, and they are not recovered in the process of foundry of the company in study. In function of 164 mg/Kg phenol concentration in the gross mass. This residue was classified in agreement with as Brazilian Legislation, as Class I - dangerous. The work had as objectives the isolation of the soil microorganisms and selection of the most efficient in the phenol degradation for study of biodegradation of the compounds incorporated in the residue. Then, three microorganisms groups were isolated in mixture soil/sand such as bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes. These microorganisms were selected as the production of phenoloxidases through of the Bavendamm Reaction and of the 1200 phenol mg/L concentration, in -the MIC. The degradation efficiency of this microorganisms was evaluated throught Bartha respirometric method. The microorganisms was introduced in the respirometers, through inoculum of each group and mixed cultures, incubated 28°C by 90 days. At the end of the period, in ali tested inoculum, the phenol removal in the gross mass of the residue more than 95%, while the best acting observed for the inoculum of mixed culture, with and without addition of nutrients, with removal of 99%. The phenol residual concentrations in the gross mass were 1,7 and 1,6 rng/Kg respectively, values lower than 10 mg/Kg, that characterizes the residue as dangerous. It was verified that phenol concentration in the gross mass was below the value of 10 mglKg according to pertinent legislation with the mixed culture in just 37 days approximately. The residue treatment through biological process carne as an alternative in the minimization of its aggression potential to the environment
