RESUMO

This dissertation deals with the reading and interpretation of Emily Dickinsonâs poetry, focusing on a number of aspects concerning the decisive influence exerted on her writing by her self-inflicted seclusion and subsequent exclusion from the literary circles of her time. Together with some contemporary concepts of literary criticism, I use Roland Barthesâ notion of âbiographemâ to make the theoretical foundation of this work. I focus on some aspects of Emily Dickinsonâs poetry that I call âstrangerizationâ, which in my opinion permeates her poetical work, and which was not yet approached, whether in the United States, her birth country, or in Brazil, where her poems have always deserved attention both from readers and literary critics
