RESUMO

The arrival of the Portuguese in Brazil during the 16th century, and of the Dutch during the 17th century, resulted in significant changes to the Brazilian environment and to its economic and military objectives. From this starting point, the current work aims to identify, characterize and analyse the various ways in which these changes occurred in Recife during the period of resistance to the Dutch (1630-1637) by reconstructing the geographical past. Primary sources of information about Brazilâs colonial period were used, particularly concerning Recife, together with secondary sources dealing with the processes of occupation, the use of Brazilian space and resources, studies of space, time, geography and history as well as cartographic sources produced by both the Portuguese and the Dutch. Within an economic context which involved other continents, Europe, Asia and Africa and the political context involving conflicts between the Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch Royal houses it can be seen that two sets of infrastructures were created to control the use of space within Recife: the first based on military strategies and the other economic. Both served to ensure the continuity of the Dutch occupation by making it lucrative, thereby guaranteeing support for and maintenance of a system that was changing to become a territory achieving goals established elsewhere. During the period under study, Recife became incorporated within a global network thereby contributing significantly to the growth of the region, both from coast inward towards the sugar plantations in the hinterland and in the opposite direction
