RESUMO

A retrospective study was done with the cases of abortion that required hospitalization in the Gynecology service, CAISM-UNICAMP. The period studied was from January 1987 through December 1992. Sociodemographic and gynecologic characyteristics, were analyzed in the use of contraceptive methods, abortion classification, gestational age, presence of complications and period of time that abortion occurred related to the presence of Misoprostol in the market. The periods were defined as: First - introduction of Misoprostol in the market; Second - knowlege of the population in its abortive characteristics and an intensive use, and Third - a decrease in its use due to legal restrictions to its commercialization. The results showed that most of the patients were white, younger than 35 years old, stable marital union and past obstetrical delivery. Abortion complication rate was high; infection and bleeding the most frequent. Induced abortion was mainly associated with infection, trauma and other major complications. When characteristics were compared between the three periods described above, we noted that the period associated with the use of Misoprostol was related to an earlier interruption of pregnancy and a higher rate of induced abortion. The third period, when Misoprostol commercialization was restricted, a decrease of inpatient treatment occured, although complications increased significantly
