RESUMO

Teachers belong to a professional category that needs the voice both as a work instrument in the knowledge transmission and in its relations to others. It is known that the knowledge transmission in the classroom does not happen only through the theoretical teaching but also through the teachers capacity to perceive the real necessities of the students in order to transmit the knowledge in a more global form. Therefore, the teachers voice should have an adjusted quality, without alterations, with vocal projections and intonations during the speech. This study was carried through with the objective to detect and to quantify vocal disorders in middle school teachers that work for the Federal District Educational Secretary. With this in mind, this study sought to identify vocal habits and risk factors of possible vocal alterations, and also to suggest to the responsible authorities a prophylaxis action aiming at a better overall life quality as well as a reduction of governmental expenses with as consequences of vocal alterations. For this, a questionnaire proposed by Ferreira et al (2003), were distributed to the teachers, this questionnaire inquired about personal information, such as professional situation, general health, possible problems in the voice, family background, and leisure habits. Schools from Plano Piloto and Cidades Satelites were selected randomly and 183 questionnaires were delivered. From those, 149 were returned for analysis. The study selected only teachers admitted by a public test and those who work in the classroom. The results indicate that most teachers of the searched sample are married females with an average age of 35, have an university degree and 13 years of professional experience. Most of them work for only one school. Of the searched participants 74.5% relate vocal alteration and attribute this alteration to the intensive use of their voice (89.2%), followed by noise exposition (65.8%), stress and the dry climate both being at 64.9%. The most frequent symptoms and sensations relative to the vocal alterations were: hoarseness, tiredness when speaking, dry throat, and throat clearing. Of this population with some alterations in the voice, 79.3% are females, 62.3% are not satisfied with their voices and 83.5% had not received during their professional formation any information about how to take care of their voices. Hence, the results justify that preventive measures relative to the vocal health, such as lectures, educative campaigns and periodic accompaniment should be implemented. Besides that, we suggest the inclusion in the formation courses for teachers of disciplines about the present theme. Those actions will help in the prevention of vocal alterations at the same time perfecting the teachers communicative function reducing, therefore, the number of teachers that need to stop working in the classrooms.
