RESUMO

In addition to human activities the water quality in reservoirs is influenced by weather and climate forcings that determine spatial and temporal variations in these systems. Conventional techniques for water quality monitoring require large time and fund investments. The synoptic view of large areas and high temporal frequency remote sensing data provides are an alternative way to estimate water quality parameters, since the relations between images data and meteorological factors are properly known. This work has evaluated the influence of meteorological factors on water quality of Itumbiara reservoir (Goiás state, Brazil), using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data and water parameters collected \textit{in situ}. During the period of September 2009 until March 2011 the cold front events were described: the months of May and August were the ones that recorded the highest average of the quantity of front events (2 - 3) and the month of November has longest cold fronts. From compartmentalization analysis based on satellite images, the reservoir was divided in: the main body of the reservoir, the Corumbá and Paranaíba tributaries and a third region under the influence of the Araguari river water. During the drought period, colored dissolved organic matter dominated the reservoir water. From the technique of Relative Water Column Stability, the largest vertical mixing in the Itumbiara reservoir was observed for the winter. Additionally, it was observed the seasonal variations and the effects of cold fronts passage over the limnological parameters of the reservoir. Remote sensing data contributed to describe the weather factors related to the dynamics of reservoirs, producing useful knowledge for management and environmental monitoring planning of water quality.
