RESUMO

The clam Anomalocardia brasiliana has been intensely exploited for many years on the Baía Sul, located at the inner side of the Santa Catarina Island. This and other resources forced the implementation, in 1992, of the Reserva Extrativista Marinha do Pirajubaé, with the goal of providing the sustainable use of the resources in the area. In 1996, part of the sandy bank where the mollusk was exploited was dragged for the construction of a freeway connecting the downtown to the south of the island, thus reducing the exploitable biomass of the species. As a consequence, the equilibrium between the stock and its management plan was disrupted, and, in 1997, the fishery was officially closed due to the low abundance of the species. Nevertheless, the fishery continued on an informal basis and new management rules were established in 2004. Since 1997, weakness of enforcement by the fishery authority has driven the reserve to a critical situation, characterized by an uncontrolled exploitation of its resources by local fishermen; many of them rely on the clam to live. This project had the goals of: a) analyzing how the mollusk fishery works, b) studying its effects on the exploitable biomass and distribution and, c) giving advice for a new management plan for the fishery. To accomplish this, a mapping of the clam biomass and density was conducted in April 2005. In addition, the clam fishery was monitored in situ during a nine month period (March 15th to November 20th 2005). The results indicated that: (a) the number of fishermen varies along the year, depending on the market; (b) the rules that regulate the fishery are not respected; (c) the fishing is conducted primarily on the mature portion of the stock and; (d) the fishing effort is excessively high, so that most of the adult biomass is removed each year from the stock. This shows that new management rules are necessary in order to protect the resource, in special, to rebuild its original biomass and maintain its recruitment success in the area.
