RESUMO

In the present investigation we studied the pharmacological effects of the crude extract and some compounds isolated from the toxic plant Pseudocalymma elegans (Vell.) Kuhlm. Most of the signs observed in cattle intoxicated with the plant: excitement, tremors, and seizures were reproduced in mice receiving an extract of the plant. The LD50 of the ethanolic extract to mice was estimated as 1.8 glkg. Doses near the LD50 induced seizures in mice while lower doses improved memory, reduced exploratory behavior, increased catalepsy time and caused anxiogenic effects. The toxic compounds of the plant were concentrated in the most polar fractions of the plant extract. The convulsant and lethal effects of the plant were observed only when a pool of these polar compounds was administered to mice, suggesting a synergistic interaction between them. We also studied the pharmacological effect
