RESUMO

Morphometric data was collected on sheep from naturalized breeds in Brazil, Uruguay and Colombia, as wella s from some commercial breeds, for comparison. Phenotypic characterization was carrie dout using size, colour and conformation of the animals, as well as sixtyeen morphometric traits. data was analysed using PROC GLM, CORR and PRINCOMP of SAS . Distance between breeds was estimated using morphology and morphometric measures by sex using the UPGMA method (Unweighted Pair Group Method Arithmetic Mean) to generate a dendrogram. Phenotypic characterization can be an acessible and easy tool to use in breeding and conservation programs. Breed significantly influenced the traits measured and in general type of rearing system and region did also. The commercial breeds in general were larger than the naturalized breeds and the Santa Inês populations in the Center-west and Southeast of Brazil were closest to the Bergamásca breed reared in the Center-west. In most of the analyses the breeds found in Colombia were closest to other Colombian breeds. The proximity between the Crioulas lanada breeds in Brazil and Uruguay may indicate a common ancestry between them.
