RESUMO
The prematurity has been considered one of the causes of the enamel defects. Moreover, the objective of this study was to show the oral alterations due the premature and low birthweight children, as well as the interceptive and preventive measures indicated, by reviewing the literature. Furthermore, it was verified the influence of the prematurity and low birthweight on the prevalence of oral alterations and suction and feeding habits, through a coorte observacional study, performed with 52 pre-term and very low birthweight children aged from 2 to 4 years. In accordance of the literature review it was possible to verify that the alterations due the prematurity and low birthweight manifest on the enamel and palatum malformation as well as in the delayed development of the primary dentition. These alterations may affect the esthetics and may predispose to dental caries and malocclusion. So, it is necessary the early establishment of preventive and interceptive measures for these children, avoiding future problems. The results of the coorte study showed that the enamel defects, as the demarcated opacity (p=0.0001) and hipoplasy (p=0.0041) had significant association with prematurity or low birthweight, as well as the delayed dental eruption (p=0.0441). The breast-feeding and bruxism were more often on the full-term children (p=0.0006 and p=0.0141, respectively), whereas the nocturnal bottle-feeding (p=0.0199), pacifier (p=0.0178) and oral hygiene (p=0.0213) were associated with the prematury and low birth-weight. These findings suggest that the prematurity and the low birthweight are indicative factors for enamel defects and delayed eruption, besides contributing to increase in non nutritive suction habits. Thus, the preventive cares for preterm children are essential for maintain the oral health, allowing proper growth and development of stomatognathic system, being of importance the multiprofessional care
