RESUMO

Based on a study of case ¿ The Superior Course of Telecommunication Technology Systems from CEFET, Pelotas, RS. I analyze the polysemy of the concept of competences, presenting the stories of significative social agents: students who graduated from this course and professors as well as work market representatives. I bring up the notion of competences for works and education, based on the contribution of authors such as Dubar, Zarafian, Ropé e Tanguy, Mertens, Irigoin and Vargas, Deluiz, Ramos, Tartuce, Teixeira and social agents involved in the research. The students who graduated until 2005 were interviewed, in a total of 18 students and 22 professors. I highlight the school and occupational background of the technicians, their perceptions on the acquired competences during the course, related aspects to the subject¿s studies, supervised stage and Conclusion Course Work ¿ CCW, as well as their perceptions about the docents and other kinds of graduation. Concerning the docent part, I present their academic and professional backgrounds, their comprehension about the graduation course, their comprehension about the graduation course, as well as the meaning of the competences which sound polysemous and with little importance in the debate. The theme starts with Brazilian Education and its Professional Education Reform, what may be realized during the interviews with the docents, specially when ¿silence¿ leads the talk related to competence for Education and Work. Concerning the work market, I make a brief incursion about the university courses of technology and I obtain further information by analyzing the job advertisements for technicians published in a newspaper of big circulation in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. he results show the separation between the official speech about the importance of the technician and the analyzed reality the separation may be realized through the pedagogical project of the course, which was created based on the notion of competences. The lack of knowledge about competences of the students and the docents is a fact, which shows the distance between the formal and the real. The competences do not seem to overlap the qualification. They seem to be another trend imposed in order to create a course, not so much to establish it, however, a difficult concept to define for the majority of the social agents. The formal attitude, concerning the relation of twelve competences which should be acquired during the course, indicates a demand requested by MEC (Education and Culture Ministry) due to the fact the stories told show the little knowledge the students and the docents have about competences. The stories, specially, about the work market ratify that. Concerning the competences is n Education, the most similar model to this course is the functionalist one, with descriptive essence, which does not consider the underlying attributes that may not be isolated of the real work practices, which are necessary for the development of specific situations, something that is in the soul of the meaning of competences.
