RESUMO
This research is divided into 4 chapters focusing 2 main topics: the importance of volatiles to the living organisms and synthesis of natural products. The first and second chapters deal with the role of volatile compounds from Clusia and Tovomita species, respectively. The chemical compositions of floral volatiles of sixteen species of Clusia belonging to four different taxonomic sections of the genus were investigated. These were in part, but not always, related to the taxonomic position of the species, and to a minor extent to the type of pollinator observed on the flowers as revealed by clustering analysis. On the other hand, droplets of fragrant oils produced by the filaments of the Tovomita flower stamens, a dioecious genus, attracts male euglossine bees as pollinators and the oils of four species (T amazonica, T acutiflora, T rubella e T aff. grata) were investigated revealing that the composition is different for all four species, possibly to selectively attract different euglossine species and to avoid interspecific cross-pollination. The third chapter deals with off-flavor arising from contaminated orange juice by Alicyclobacillus. Based on gas chromatography/olfactometry technique we proposed that the off-flavors compounds are isovaleric and 2-methy! butyric acids, but not guaiacol as suggested in the literature. Finally the last chapter describes the very first attempts to prepare polyisoprenylated benzophenones from floral resins of Clusia species using two bio-mimetic approaches.
