RESUMO

This is a study about the formation of the city of AlcÃntara in MaranhÃo, establishing a dialogue between urbanism and history through the caracterization of the cityâs urban and archietectonic composition at the diferent moments of formation, questioning the existence of urban planning in the prospective that the rescue of thje urban formation is a fundamental instrument to understand the urban plannning dilemmas of the city nowadays. The long âterm chronology covers three centuries investigating the origins of the city from the NazarÃâs ephemeral population hyphotesis and the âTapuitaperaâindigenous village which was a strategic gateway for the European conquerors in the XVI centurys: Santo AntonioDâalcantra religious village in the XVII century was marked by strong religious presence up to the rural aristocracy that used to export cotton in the XVIII century when it finally consolidates its urban and architectonic formation.We establish then a comparison with the city of Mariana in Minas Gerais a baroque context
