RESUMO

The author made a clinical study of abnormal swallowing habits trying to achieve the correct treatment in the general odontológica pediatric out patient clinic. She selected 30 children from ClTnica Integrada Infantil da Faculdade de Odontologia de Piracicaba -UNICAMP -, of the both sex, between 4 to 11 years of age with abnormal oral habit presenting malocclusion type Class I of Angle, with anterior open bite. The children were devided in 3 groups of ten each concerning the type of the used method: 1) Mecanic Method - it was applied palatal crib in patients from 4 to 7 years of age. 2) Functional Method - means to correct the wrong habit using special exercices of the swallowing muscles and place the tongue in the proper position. Patients from 8 to 10 years of age. 3) Mixed Method - means to use the palatal crib during the night and make the special exercices of the swallowing muscles during the day. Children from 7 to 11 years of age. The final result indicated that the more efficient treatment of abnormal swallowing is the mixed method. The comprehention and effort of the patient associated to active participation of parents also showed to be very import in the final result of the treatment
