RESUMO

This dissertation investigates the attitudes of end-of-course Teaching Degree students at UFRPE towards homophobia in the classroom. The research, primarily based on the technique of survey (questionnaire), aimed at collecting data on what these students (teachers-to-be) know and think about homosexuality. Afterwards, the information gathered was expanded and explored more deeply by means of semi-directed interviews. The results seemed to reveal that, amongst these future teachers, homophobia is quite often softened by the use of a politically-correct discourse of tolerance. Nevertheless, in general, their attitudes in face of hypothetical homophobic manifestations in the classroom would result, perhaps involuntarily, in actions which tend to reinforce the notion of a compulsory heteronormativity. This observation, throughout the theoretical-analytical development of this study, confirmed the idea that homophobia consists in a power display produced by the dominating institutions â here, in this case, the school and the university â in order to maintain heterosexuality as the only legitimate sexual identity. Thus, under the light of the Queer Theory, it is discussed whether the quest for a homophobia-free education should, or not, pressuppose an effort towards the effacing of the standardized sexual identitiesâ demarcations. Through this perspective, it is likely that the main contribution arising from this dissertation is the reflection on its own research process, not only related to the questions and doubts posed by the participants, but also concerning the ideological reformulations inferred from the theoretical investment and from the interpretation of the data collected
